Report: Gas Leaks at Massachusetts School Properties

Our new report with HEET provides the first statewide analysis of gas leaks reported at school properties. The results make tangible and relevant some of the ways in which our continued reliance on fossil fuels is a present danger to communities and is undermining the future of today’s young people.

Our major finding is that in 2021 alone, 91 schools in Massachusetts had a reported gas leak in a gas main or service line at the school property, 31 of which were graded as hazardous. (NOTE: These data are from last year and all 31 of the leaks graded as hazardous have been fixed.)

We are publishing this report in an effort to persuade state lawmakers and state agencies to advance policies and allocate resources that would assist schools in transitioning toward safer, healthier, more cost-effective, carbon-free solutions.
