SB 1182 and SB 1374 advance through the Senate and head to the Assembly
We’ve been hard at work on the two bills we’re co-sponsoring this session, and we’re excited to share that they both passed through the Senate and are now in committee in the Assembly. Though the state budget is a challenge this year, we see legislators wanting to protect schools through difficult times.
SB 1182 (Gonzalez) the Climate Resilient Schools Act, will create a state-wide master plan for climate resilient schools to ensure an equitable transition to healthy and sustainable school buildings and grounds while leveraging federal funding to get there. We’re co-sponsoring this bill with California Federation of Teachers (CFT) and California Labor for Climate Jobs.
SB 1374 (Becker) will ensure that schools can actually use all of the solar energy they generate on their property, using those electrons to offset rising energy costs and keep precious dollars where they belong: in classrooms. We’re co-sponsoring this bill with School Energy Coalition.
Excitingly, two other bills in the Climate Ready Schools Coalition umbrella, for which we provide backbone support, are also moving.
SB 1091 (Menjivar), will make it easier for schools to implement Schoolyard Greening Projects by capping the path-of-travel requirements to 20% of total project costs.
AB 691 (Ting) will extend and improve the California Schools Healthy Air, Plumbing, and Efficiency (CalSHAPE) Ventilation Program, which funds work to improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency in schools.
