California Students Push for Solar Schools and SB 1374

On September 5th, we supported hundreds of students across California as they rallied in support of SB 1374.

Wearing matching t-shirts and holding banners, students at over a dozen schools delivered passionate speeches and launched a social media campaign expressing an urgent call from the next generation for sustainable and solar-powered schools.

Some students even joined a press conference with Senator Josh Becker at Lockwood STEAM Academy in Oakland, alongside State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, school district representatives, and supporters.

Ella Min, a junior from Amador Valley High School, took center stage and shared the impact that Prop 39 funding for a solar and energy storage system had on her school in reducing emissions and creating savings that can be reinvested into her education. Ella urged Governor Newsom to sign SB 1374, explaining how it could allow other California schools to follow suit and help create a sustainable future.

"It's not just a bill - it's a promise to our generation." - Ella Min, student at Amador Valley High School

You can review media coverage of the press conference on NBC Bay Area News, KTVU, Today in the Bay, CapRadio, and the Lake County Record-Bee. The Independent also featured a piece discussing the broad support for SB 1374, Rooftop Solar Bill Would Halt 2023 CPUC Restrictions.
